Satellite-Based Derivation of High-Resolution Forest Information Layers for Operational Forest Management
نویسندگان
چکیده
A key factor for operational forest management and forest monitoring is the availability of up-to-date spatial information on the state of forest resources. Earth observation can provide valuable contributions to these information needs. The German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate transferred its inherited forest information system to a new architecture that is better able to serve the needs of centralized inventory and planning services, down to the level of forest districts. During this process, a spatially adaptive classification approach was developed to derive high-resolution forest information layers (e.g., forest type, tree species distribution, development stages) based on multi-temporal satellite data. This study covers the application of the developed approach to a regional scale (federal state level) and the further adaptation of the design to meet the information needs of the state forest service. The results confirm that the operational requirements for mapping accuracy can, in principle, be fulfilled. However, the state-wide mapping experiment also revealed that the ability OPEN ACCESS Forests 2015, 6 1983 to meet the required level of accuracy is largely dependent on the availability of satellite observations within the optimum phenological time-windows.

Investigating New Advances in Forest Species Classification
Detailed forest classification provides critical information for forest managers. The potential for species level classification from remotely sensed data has been challenging in the past because of limitations of both available image data and traditional classification techniques. Such limitations may be reduced by the increased availability of higher spatial resolution imagery as well as deta...

Up-to-date information of forest resources is required at a variety of scales in order to support forest management practices ranging from strategic to operational levels. The rate of change in Scottish forests is significant and may occur over short periods due to active silvicultural management and the impact of natural disturbances (e.g. windthrow). Field-based sample inventories collect inf...
متن کاملThe updating of forest resource data for management planning for privately owned forests in Finland
In Finland, the forest resource data for management planning is traditionally collected by periodic standwise field inventories, which are usually carried-out over different regions during 10–15 year intervals. The data is used for the compilation of management plans for forest estates. Between inventories the plan and the original stand data can be used, e.g., in the operational planning of ti...

Information needs associated with forest management and reporting requires data with a steadily increasing level of detail and temporal frequency. Remote sensing satellites commonly used for forest monitoring (eg, Landsat, SPOT) typically collect imagery with suffi cient temporal frequency, but lack the requisite spatial and categorical detail for some forest inventory information needs. Vegetation in any landscape reflects its health condition. Monitoring land use change and land cover plays a key role in environmental planning and management. Mazandaran province has always been considered by tourists due to its high tourism potential and consequently the vegetation, especially the forest, has been damaged. In this study, vegetation Contiguity and integrity in Mazandaran using...
